DETAILS

This Halloween, descend into the heart of Iowa City to see, smell and feel the rich brewing history of the underground beer caves! Featured in the upcoming film, "Death of a Brewer," the caves and many buildings in the Northside neighborhood are living relics of the battle for booze during Prohibition. Join your tour guide Doug Alberhasky, "Bier Guy" at John's Grocery and producer of the film at 6 p.m. at John's Grocery. He will share a brief history of the neighborhood, followed by a visit to Brewery Square, home of the Holtz and Geiger/Graf Union brewing company, before taking a 24' ladder down into the caves and traveling back in time to the 1850s. The tour will end back at John's Grocery's tasting room for more on the history of beer in Iowa City and the making of "Death of a Brewer" as you sample a number of handpicked, world-class beers. This is an exclusive look at Iowa City's scandalous past that you won't want to miss! This tour has some physically demanding features and participants need to be in good physical condition, must not be under the influence beforehand and not have a fear of heights. All participants will be required to sign a waiver prior to the start of the tour. All proceeds go to Bur Oak Land Trust's mission of advancing biodiversity, protecting and restoring lands in eastern Iowa and connecting people to nature.
